Introduction to Wwise Motion

For the first time, game developers have access to a complete and integrated solution for creating motion (rumble) for platform controllers. As with audio, the Wwise Motion production pipeline allows you to author, simulate, profile, and edit in real time, directly within Wwise’s full-featured authoring application.

A Flexible & Powerful Solution

To be as flexible as possible, Wwise Motion allows designers to either generate motion automatically or customize it:

  • Automatic motion generation: The actual sound signal is used to generate motion. This allows you, for example, to flag the explosion sound effects to automatically generate the controller’s motion.

  • Custom motion generation: Create your own algorithm as a source plug-in, use the Wwise Motion generator, or use a specially-created audio file that delivers the feel of specific motions. This means that, for example, you can attach the physics engine to the motion engine in order to automatically generate motion movement based on game dynamics.

To control or enhance the motion in your game, you can apply effects, modify properties, such as volume and pitch, or dynamically adjust the rumble force based on object proximity or distance attenuation. With Wwise Motion, all features in the Wwise authoring application are available to manage motion.

Lightweight & Cross-Platform

Wwise Motion is extremely light-weight causing virtually no impact on CPU or memory usage.  This is because motion generated with Wwise Motion is derived from playing audio and the voice pipeline runs at an extremely low sample rate.

Wwise Motion can be developed for all platforms simultaneously because it supports a variety of motion controllers and other peripherals, including:

  • Xbox 360™ controllers
  • PlayStation®3 controllers
  • Wii™ controllers
  • DirectInput and XInput compatible controllers
  • Any new controller or peripheral through the Wwise Motion API
