Delivering the Assets

Instead of delivering an overall stereo or surround sound mix, the composer delivered the smaller component pieces as mostly audio files or, in some cases, as MIDI files. For example, a bounce of the first four bars of the COMBAT guitar is one file, while the next four bars is another. The same could be done for the bass guitar or synth parts for specific ranges of measures within specific music sections.

In some cases, delivering a separate audio file for each individual track could be a bit too much granularity. As an alternative, drum or percussion parts, or multiple string tracks could be delivered as a premix, which are commonly referred to as stem mixes.

[Tip]

Some DAWs provide advanced features specifically for batch exporting and naming assets. In Nuendo 7, the Audio Export feature was used, which provides numerous options for how marker information can automatically identify areas for export as well as tailor how marker names can be integrated into the resulting audio filenames.

[Note]

From the Wwise-201 course page you can optionally download a version of the Wwise-201 DAW Project as an AAF project. AAF is a standard project file format that can be imported by many DAWs. The AAF project file will reference the various audio files and their proper positioning in the timeline as it relates to a real-time timecode. AAF does not support musical tempo information or section markers, so the imported material won’t at first make sense from a musical standpoint. To address this, you can further import a standard MIDI file. This contains the tempo map as well as the musical segment markers necessary to identify the various pieces of music. This will also import the raw MIDI data into the project that is used in Lesson 4. The AAF project and the standard MIDI file can be download at https://www.audiokinetic.com/download/lessons/Wwise201_EDL.zip .

Throughout this course you'll be referencing the Wwise-201 Music Folder, which is the source for the musical assets you’ll be importing into your Wwise project. This folder reflects the delivered files sourced by Vibe Avenue. Notice the structure is very organized with subfolders based on the 7 primary music sections discussed earlier.

This organizational approach provides the integrator not only with a clear understanding of which assets are associated with which pieces of music, but allows them to more quickly import and implement these assets as you’ll discover in the following lessons. Remember, organization is key when transitioning between the compositional and integration phases of the production.
