The Profiler Layout

To capture sound engine information from a game playing, you use the Profiler layout. The Profiler is a way to monitor information directly from the sound engine, and can provide a very detailed estimate of resource usage. While the Profiler can be used within the Wwise authoring tool (no connection to a game), it can also provide you with in-depth information directly from the game or the Unity project.

[Note]

You will be asked to use the Profiler repeatedly throughout this certification. If you are following the certification online on Audiokinetic's website, you might want to bookmark this section.

Each Wwise project you make will benefit from a custom sound design, tailored for the needs and requirements of the game. When optimizing you’ll often start by analyzing and understanding the sound engine behavior and resource usage. Let’s navigate to the Profiler and get a sense of how to use it.

  1. From the Layouts menu, select Profiler.

Unless you’ve already used it previously, the Profiler layout should look quite blank at this point. Let’s profile the WAG game to monitor and demonstrate how it works.

  2. In the Unity menu, go to Audiokinetic > Certification > 251 > Lesson 1 and select Profiler Scene.

  3. Now return to Wwise and select Remote from the toolbar.

A Remote Connections window will appear. There are many ways of connecting to the game, but if you play the game on the same computer, the game should automatically appear in the Available tab. As long as any scene in the WAG Unity project is open you can connect to it, even when not in playmode.

  4. Click Refresh and select the Wwise Adventure Game in the Available list.

  5. Click Connect.

Let’s capture a session of completing Quest 1. Now that you’ve connected the Profiler, you can play the game and it will automatically capture information until you exit playmode. All information will be displayed in real-time in the Profiler.

  6. In Unity, press Play.

  7. Complete Quest 1.

  8. Press Play to exit playmode.

As you exit playmode, the Profiler in Wwise will automatically stop capturing information. Let's return to the Profiler.
