Understanding Effect Placement

You can apply Effects on either:

  • An audio object in the Actor-Mixer (AM) or Interactive Music (IM) Hierarchy; or

  • A bus in the Master-Mixer (MM) Hierarchy.

The applied Effect will have the exact same processing in the AM, IM, or MM hierarchies. But, the placement can have a great influence on how much in resources you’re using on applying the same Effect.

  • Audio Object (AM / IM Hierarchy): All audio objects are processed independently for each channel in the triggered audio source. For example, stereo audio sources would require two times of processing, whereas mono would require one.

  • Audio Bus (MM Hierarchy): Is the top level of control for all sound in the project. All audio objects in the AM hierarchy is referenced to a Bus in the MM hierarchy, and so AM Effects will be processed before MM Effects. An Effect on an Audio Bus is applied after mixing, which means that it’ll not apply the Effect to every audio source passing through individually, but rather the collective sum of downmixed sounds.
