Module 12: Understanding the Master Audio Bus

During gameplay, it’s not uncommon for fifty or more sounds to play simultaneously. In this module, you'll learn how Wwise mixes all of those sounds together, considering a computer or video game console might only have two output channels, left and right.

Based on its name, you might think mixing happens in Actor-Mixer objects. But that's not the case. In fact, no mixing occurs in any of the objects in the Actor-Mixer Hierarchy. Instead, mixing of sounds is accomplished in the Project Explorer’s Master-Mixer Hierarchy. This is an area of Wwise that hasn't been mentioned in any of the earlier modules, but you’ll soon learn you’ve been using it all along.

You'll also use the Voice Profiler layout, which you might remember from Module 7: Profiling Game Syncs, to see how the final volume of a sound is determined.

By completing this module, you'll gain the following skills:

  • Checking which bus an object is routed to

  • Using the Voice Profiler to determine the final volume of sounds

Before starting this module, make sure you have completed the following:

Approximate Duration:

  • 20 minutes
