The McDSP ML1 Mastering Limiter plug-in controls signal peaks, while increasing overall program levels. You can apply the ML1 effect to the Master Audio Bus to quickly achieve stunning results for any game.

The algorithm used in Audiokinetic's version of the McDSP ML1 Mastering Limiter is slightly different from the ProTools implementation. The changes were made to accommodate certain conditions where overloaded input signals (up to +12 dB) could not be handled without producing significant clipping distortion in the output. |
The Ceiling control sets the maximum output level. The Threshold control determines what level the limiter starts to detect signal peaks. The difference between the Ceiling and Threshold levels is the maximum amount of gain applied to the incoming audio. Louder signal peaks will be mostly limited, while lower signal levels will be increased. Both types of signals will not exceed the Ceiling control level.
The Knee control adjusts the transition between input signal level boosting and input signal limiting. In a conventional limiter the signal level is increased until the output ceiling is reached. This makes the audio louder, but also can create a significant amount of distortion. A "soft knee" before the output ceiling can reduce the amount of distortion and make the limiter more "transparent".
The Release control determines how fast the limiter recovers from signal peak reduction. The faster the release, the louder the limiter output level. Another unique control to the ML1 limiter, the Mode control, sets up how the limiter deals with peaks and overall signal power. Different combinations of Release times and Mode settings give the ML1 a wide range of "styles". From a crushing drum buss to subtle vocal limiting, the ML1 mastering limiter can do it all.
The McDSP ML1 plug-in contains a series of properties, many of which can be edited in real time and can be mapped to specific Game Parameters using RTPCs. A special indicator is placed beside the property value showing whether it uses an RTPC or not.
