Understanding Control Surface View Groups

You can use View Groups to bind the content of specific views (objects) to Binding Group content. You could, for example, map the objects of the Mixing Desk to a Control Surface.

A View Group contains bindings that are associated with objects of a view, identified by their index in the view.

Here are the views that support View Groups and how they assign the indexes:

  • Mixing Desk: one index per vertical strip.

  • List View, Query Editor, Reference View, Master-Mixer Console: one index per row.

  • Property Editor, Effect Editor, Source Editor, Modulator Editor: index 1 only, for the current object.

  • Soundcaster: one index per module.

Here is an example of a Control Surface View Group that you can use inside the Mixing Desk, List View, or Soundcaster:

  • Mixing View Group:

    • Binding: Property:Voice Volume - Index:1 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 0

    • Binding: Property:Voice Volume - Index:2 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 1

    • Binding: Property:Voice Volume - Index:3 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 2

    • Binding: Property:Voice Volume - Index:4 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 3

    • Binding: Command:Solo - Index:1 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 32

    • Binding: Command:Solo - Index:2 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 33

    • Binding: Command:Solo - Index:3 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 34

    • Binding: Command:Solo - Index:4 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 35

    • Binding: Command:Mute - Index:1 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 64

    • Binding: Command:Mute - Index:2 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 65

    • Binding: Command:Mute - Index:3 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 66

    • Binding: Command:Mute - Index:4 - Key:MyController Ch.1 CC 67

This View Group maps the following:

  • 4 hardware sliders to Voice Volume of 4 objects.

  • 4 hardware buttons to Solo of 4 objects.

  • 4 hardware buttons to Mute of 4 objects.

Create View Groups

Before you can associate View Groups with the supported views, you must first create a group.

To create a View Group:

  1. Open a Control Surface Session in one of the following ways:

    In the Project Explorer:

    1. Open the Sessions tab and double-click the desired Control Surface Session. The session opens in an Object Tab.

    2. Click the activation icon (. The session is loaded and activated.

    From the menu bar:

    1. Click Views > Utilities > Control Surface Bindings. The Contorl Surface Bindings view opens.

    2. Click the selector button [>>] and select the desired session. The session is loaded and activated.

  2. In the view or tab, click Add Group.

  3. Type a name for the group and click OK.

  4. Create bindings in the group with the Add & Learn Binding button, as described in Creating Control Surface Bindings.

Associate a View Group with the Mixing Desk

The following procedure describes how to associate a view group with the Mixing Desk view to replicate the mappings described in the example at the beginning of this section.

To complete the procedure, ensure that you have an active Control Surface Session and at least one view group.

To associate a View Group with the Mixing Desk:

  1. From the Views menu, click Editors > Mixing Desk.

  2. Click the selector button [>>] in the upper-right corner of the Mixing Desk.

  3. From the menu, click the desired View Group:

    The View Group is loaded and the name of the group appears in the Mixing Desk view as well as the Control Surface Toolbar. You can activate or deactivate the group by clicking the group name in either location.
