I would like to have a 2d (stereo) sound that has an attenuation and falloff. Is this possible using the built in positioning settings?

Or will I have to set up an RTPC? If so, what would be the best way to do so?

I think I am able to solve this issue by not enabling spatialization, am I correct?

Correct, you need to configure your sound as 3D with the "Enable Spatialization" option unchecked to apply an attenuation curve to a 2D sound.
