Can Switches be used per game object - or are they always for the whole game

I am working on a game that needs to change certain sounds based on the size of the NPC spawned.  There are characters that have 3 sizes - and i would like to add footsteps that change with the size of the character.  The problem being that sometimes there are small and large versions of the NPCs on screen at the same time - a large turtle and a small turtle.  Can the switch instance keep all the attributes for the small character in the small size, or will it change to the large one if that character is spawned later?
