Assigning a Target to a MIDI Music Track

Now you need to connect the Boss-A-Arpeggio MIDI Music Track to the Arpeggio Synth Sound SFX object you just created.

  1. In the Interactive Music Hierarchy, expand the Boss-A Music Segment, and select the Boss-A-Arpeggio Music Track.

In order to target the Arpeggio Synth, you need to access properties in the MIDI tab. By default, the MIDI tab is not displayed, so you’ll need to add it.

  2. In the Music Track Property Editor, click the plus symbol.

Tabs available for display are listed.

  3. Click the MIDI check box.

The MIDI tab is added to the Music Track Property Editor.

  4. Click the MIDI tab.

The MIDI Target group indicates where the MIDI data played from a Music Track will be directed. You can see in the MIDI Target group that there currently is no assignment. The unassigned condition of this property is being inherited from the parent object, so you’ll need to override the parent setting to be able to make an assignment.

  5. In the MIDI Target group, select the Override parent check box.

Now you can make your assignment by dragging the desired target from the Actor-Mixer Hierarchy to the MIDI Target property.

  6. Drag the Arpeggio Synth Sound SFX object to the MIDI Target field in the Property Editor.

Now the Boss-A-Arpeggio Music Track will send its MIDI data to the Arpeggio Synth Sound SFX object. To test the connection, play the Boss-A Music Segment and you’ll hear that a new sound has been added to the mix.

  7. In the Interactive Music Hierarchy select the Boss-A Music Segment and press play. You can now hear the Boss-A-Arpeggio Music Track in the mix.

    [Tip]

You’ll be listening to various MIDI Music Tracks as you continue in this lesson. You may prefer to listen to the Music Tracks without the main music bed playing. Remember that you can use the solo and mute features to isolate the Music Tracks you want or don’t want to hear. Instead of switching to the Interactive Music Layout to select these within the Music Segment Editor, Mute and Solo buttons for selected objects are also found at the top of the Property Editor.
